Training

We provide first class training for your polar needs. Ranging from basic boat handling, to firearms and survival training.

We can provide basic guide training in packages or modules to aid your polar guiding career.

Saxon Expeditions is the only current provider of the Rescue 3 Polar Boat Training course and certification- this course was written with Rescue3, an internationally recognised organisation specialising in swiftwater and technical rescue and is the worlds first certificate for small boat operations in the polar regions that is awarded by an external body.

R3 Polar Boat Training

This course is delivered by Instructors with many years experience in the polar regions and teaching boat handling for various organisations.

 

Duration: 16 hours (2 days)

 

Prerequisites:  RYA level 2 or equivalent

The training course covers all advanced aspects of basic boat handling needed to operate in the polar regions including wildlife, ice and glacier awareness and introduce you to the guidelines covering small boat operations in these regions.

You will gain experience using our fleet of D Class, Arancia and Zodiac boats using tiller steer outboards and demonstrate skills such as friction locks, multiple casualty recovery, navigation and self rescue.

Mountain Skills

A Mountain Skills course is a great opportunity to learn more about looking after yourself in steep rocky places, where the scenery is breathtaking and weather changeable.

 

Duration: 2 days

Prerequisites: Minimum age: 10, some hill walking experience and a reasonable level of fitness

  • Planning a journey in the mountains

  • What to take and how to pack

  • Navigation in the mountains

  • simple scrambling

  • Common mountain hazards and how to deal with them

  • What to do in an emergency

Outdoor Risk Management (ORM)

Map Navigation Activity

The Outdoor Risk Management (ORM) course is for people working in remote areas, coastal areas, upland terrain and/or unfamiliar terrain. It enables them to identify associated hazards and to give them basic skills to work safely and deal with any incidents in these environments.

Duration:12 hours (2 days)

 

Prerequisites:

  • None

  • Weather for remote areas

  • Personal kit for use in remote areas

  • Navigation

  • Risk assessments

  • Hazard recognition

  • Emergency situations

Safe Working Near Water

The Safe Working Near Water course is designed for people tasked with working near water and who will be issued with lifejackets but will not be expected to intentionally enter the water, eg EA, SEPA, NRW personnel, construction industry workers, road and bridge maintenance workers.

Course length: 6 hours (1 day)

 

Prerequisites: None

 

Accredited by: Rescue 3 Europe

  • Swimming and self-rescue in lifejackets

  • Throwbags and other conditional rescues

  • Exiting the water

  • Considerations for tethered working (if used by agency)
